Hospital catering boss takes part in public sector food talks at House of Commons

Hospital catering boss Iain Robertson was among industry leaders who took part in talks at the House of Commons highlighting current food issues across the public sector.

Iain, Catering Operations Manager at Solent NHS Trust, attended the round-table discussion in his capacity as Wessex branch director of the Hospital Caterers’ Association.

Chaired by Sharon Hodgson, Labour MP for Washington and Sunderland West, the meeting addressed current challenges across public sector catering including food inflation, recruitment and retention, and procurement concerns.

Iain, a former NHS chef who was representing hospital caterers across the country, said: “Obviously the current cost of living crisis affects not only households but caterers trying to provide hot, healthy and tasty meals.

“It was good to listen to people from other parts of the public sector. All of us have challenges with rising costs at the moment so it was interesting to hear others’ experiences and what mitigation they are putting into place.”

The annual meeting of Public Sector Catering’s “most influential” people also included representatives from schools, universities, and suppliers.

Solent’s hard-working catering teams provide three meals a day across five inpatient sites as well as two busy staff and visitor restaurants.
